Several HPS members have
asked Harry where he took the picture of the snarling European wild cat which earned him a commended in the last open
competition.
It was at the British
Wildlife Centre in Surrey where we both enjoyed
a day last September.
You’ll
find it on the A22 at Newchapel, just 10 minutes from Junction 6 on the
M25. a bit
of a journey from Harpenden, yes, but well worth the effort!
The centre has over 40
different wild animals, in large natural enclosures – otters,
badgers, foxes, deer, red squirrels and lots more. It’s open
to the public every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday from March to
October and every day during school holidays. However, if you want to get a
real close-up of the occupants, it’s best to
book a mid-week photographic day, as we did, when the centre is closed to
everyone but your group.
It costs £50 but is worth
every penny. A guide will take you
into the enclosures with the animals so you can get right down beside the
water with the otters and within a couple of feet of the foxes.
