Preparing Digital Files for HPS Internal Competitions

These guidance notes are based on Photoshop Elements 6 on a PC. If using different software the same tasks need to be undertaken, but the steps may differ.

1.
Open Photoshop Elements:
Select ‘Edit’

2.
Open your image:
File > Open (navigate to your chosen image within your directory)

3.
Ensure that the sRGB colour space (profile) is used:
Edit > Colour Settings and select ‘Always Optimize colours for computer screens’ - click OK. This ensures that you will embed the correct colour profile into your image.

4.
Resize your image:
Image > Resize > Image Size. Ensure the ‘Constrain Proportions’ and the ‘Resample’ boxes are ticked, and before you click OK take one of the following steps:

For a horizontal (landscape) image change the pixel size of the width to 1400 in the pixel dimension box. If when you change the width pixel size to 1400 the height shows more than 1050 change the height to 1050 in the height box (which will automatically adjust the width). Click OK.
For a vertical (portrait) image change the pixel size height to 1050 in the pixel dimension box, then click OK.
For a square image, both the height and width should be 1050 pixels. Click OK.
There is no need to change the resolution. Your image will now look much smaller on the screen; double click the hand tool (or go to View > Fit on Screen) to show your image larger on the monitor.

5.
Ensure your image is 8 bit:
Image > Mode > 8 bit (if your image is already 8 bit then this option will be greyed out)

6.
Flatten Layers:
If you have more than one layer ensure the image is flattened by going to Layers > Flatten Image

7.
Save the File:
File > Save As - this brings up a dialogue box

At the top under ‘Save In’ select the directory in which to save your image.
In the box ‘File Name’ enter your chosen title in the following format:
TITLE(space)by(space)Name, with the title in upper case, and the author's name in title case, e.g. HARPENDEN SUNSET by Joe Bloggs.
In the ‘Format’ box scroll down and click on JPEG.
Ensure the ICC box is ticked. Click Save.
This brings up the JPEG Options dialogue box. Under ‘Image Options’ select Quality Maximum (12), ensure the ‘Format Option’ Baseline Standard is checked and click OK.

8.
Your image has now been saved to your chosen directory and is ready for transfer to a USB Flash Drive or CD.

Following these instructions carefully ensures your image will be projected at the specified resolution on the screen with the correct colour profile.
